The million refit includes seven bars, a ladies lounge, two beer gardens, VIP lounge and a stage for live bands complete with a million-dollar lighting and sound set-up. “It’s exciting but I can hardly stand,” an exhausted Mr Lyons said. “I’m extremely proud, now I just want Geelong people to feel the same way.”

Mr Lyons,  worked with Melbourne architect James Bate on the refit and used his own artistic flair to decorate the pub. “It’s my dream, it’s everything that I’ve dreamed of creating and now the day has come to share it with everyone,” Lyons said. In 1992, Darryn Lyons founded the picture company Big Pictures after working for News of the World and the Daily Mail. Big Pictures supplies paparazzi-style photography for news organizations.

Lyons gained widespread media attention when his company sold a photograph to News of the World, which was used to support a claim that soccer star David Beckham was having an affair with his personal assistant Rebecca Loos. When Big Pictures launched in 1992 it took the industry by storm. Big Pictures are now the world’s largest celebrity picture agency with a worldwide staff of 75 representing over 1000 photographers, supplying pictures to 40 countries. It was revealed this week that X Factor judge and pop princess Cheryl Cole has once again hit the celebrity news headlines thanks to her choice of body art. It seems the singer spent 11 hours in a tattooist’s chair being inked up with her latest piece – a 13-inch butterfly-style design.

According to The Mirror, Cole used the National Television Awards on Wednesday to show off her latest acquisition and sources have suggested it is symbolic of her freedom,following her high profile divorce from footballer Ashley Cole.

The newspaper cited friends of the star as saying they had been told the tattoo was “deeply personal” and that the final design took some weeks to create. “It has a strong symbolic meaning and signifies a fresh start and my new independence,” she is claimed to have said. “The sitting itself was pretty painful but I was determined to get it done in one hit. I didn’t cry once!”

However, Cheryl is not the only famous person to grace the celebrity gossip columns thanks to their range of tattoos. In fact this type of bodily enhancement has been associated with rock n’ roll for generations – but some have taken the meaning behind the ink to extremes.

For example, hip hop wild boy Eminem took inspiration from his troubled long-term relationship with ex-wife and mother of his young child Kim. In addition to having ‘Rot in Pieces’ with a tombstone bearing her name, the artist also known as Marshall Mathers more recently had a tattoo that proclaims his love for her. He also carries the names of his Uncle Ronnie and close friend Proof – both of whom died leaving a fairly well documented hole in his life. The name of his rap band D-12 adorns Eminem’s forearms as well as a number dedicated to his daughter Haillie Jade.

One inked celebrity who wears her inspirations quite literally on her sleeve of course is Transformer’s star Megan Fox. However, in addition to a portrait of her heroine Marilyn Monroe, Fox also carries a piece of scripture that goes around the side of her body. The poem reads: “Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music”, but while many have speculated on what it means, there has been even more discussion about who actually wrote it. Some have said it is the translated work of an 18th century Jewish mystic, while others have attributed it to US comedian George Carlin.

I do not know why but I am always peaked with what is the current issue between my two favorite stars, who happens to be Brad and Angelina. If on fashion, I am also glad to know who wears the best dress for an awards night. What’s more, the public constantly craves this sort of information, fuelling the paparazzi and the media to continuously work towards uncovering the latest stores snapping the most talk-worthy pictures.

But one important question remains: just why is the public so obsessed with celebrities? Why is celebrity news in such great demand? And what do people feel they get out of it? The answer is multi-faceted.

To begin, celebrities are in the limelight in an entertainment sense – whether in movies, TV shows, the modelling world, or any other facet of the industry. Because they are seemingly a part of people’s lives to begin with, many individuals often feel some sort of entitlement to celebrity news. Thus, individuals actively search for celebrity news; and when they find it, they often want more.

Another theory is that the lives of celebrities somehow compensate for things we don’t have in our own lives. Celebrities are rich and famous, they own the latest material products, and they’re often in relationships with other well-known celebrities. For an average, middle class person, such qualities are often alluring – simply because they offer a glimpse into the type of lifestyle that might be out of reach. Celebrity news: SAG Awards honours top TV and film stars

The Hollywood awards train rolled on this week after the celebrity news pages were filled with the latest recipients at the annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) honours. Typically, the stars were out in force to support the event, which recognises performances across film and TV over the last 12 months.

 

A glittering ceremony took place at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, with celebrity gossip columns furiously debating the style choices of the nominees and visiting stars. Two of the top honours inside the walls of the venue, however, went to a predominantly British movie. The King’s Speech is already taking plaudits left, right and centre at the moment and has scooped 12 nominations for this years’ Academy Awards. The film took the gong for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards, as well as picking up the Male Actor in a Leading Role category for Colin Firth. In the first category, the film beat Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, David O Russell’s The Fighter, Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are Alright and David Fincher’s The Social Network – all of which are films listed as potential winners for a Best Picture Oscar this year.

 

The lead actress award went to Natalie Portman for her role as Nina Sayers in Black Swan. Portman plays a young successful ballerina who takes a journey into the darkest depths of her imagination in her pursuit of the perfect performance. She too could be picking up an Academy Award for the same film if the votes go her way on Sunday 27th. Supporting honours went to Christian Bale and Melissa Leo for The Fighter.

 

In the primetime television slots there were wins for Boardwalk Empire (Ensemble Drama), Modern Family (Ensemble Comedy) Steve Buscemi (Male Actor: Drama  – Boardwalk Empire), Julianna Margulies (Female Actor: Drama – The Good Wife), Alec Baldwin (Male Actor: Comedy – 30 Rock) and Betty White (Female Actor: Comedy – Hot in Cleveland). TV movie/miniseries wins went to Al Pacino (Male Actor – You Don’t Know Jack) and Clare Danes (Female Actor – Temple Grandin). Finally, awards for stunts went to Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster hit movie Inception and in the television section, vampire drama True Blood was singled out for praise.

 

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were established in their current format in 1995 and are now one of the biggest industry events of the year, seen by many as one of the key markers for The BAFTAs and Oscars that follow in February. SAG itself is the largest US union representing working actors and was set up in 1933.
