One lass whose hair maintenance must take up about 76% of her downtime is Lily Allen, who showed off yet another outlandish barnet at a gig in Manchester. Equal parts Cruelle de Vil and Debbie Harry, Lil pulls it off in celebrity style – probably literally, in fact, since it turns out the “hair” was actually a wig. What a swizz.

What have Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue and Dita Von Teese got in common? Apart from cracking sets of pins, of course. No idea? Surely it’s obvious! They’ve all been spotted gallivanting around at London Fashion Week, where Dita and a Dior-clad Kyles checked out, well, the latest Christian Dior clobber and Tina took in Giorgio Armani’s new collection. Anne Hathaway was at Armani too, but in a horrible dress so we’re choosing to ignore her.

Meanwhile in neighbouring Germany, Cheryl Cole was wowing all comers with a sterling performance at a music awards show – and apparently using everything she’s learned from Victoria Beckham insodoing. No, we don’t mean she didn’t actually sing, we’re referring to one reflective UK tabloid’s insistence that our Chezza wouldn’t know one end of a Louboutin pump from the other were it not for Posh’s tutelage. Unconvinced, we are.

Talking of style icons, the rumour mill’s been pumping out all manner of tittle-tattle relating to the Sex and the City girls… sorry, ladies. If we’re to believe the latest round of groundless hearsay, the makers of the SatC movies (the second one’s pretty much finished, by all accounts) are anxious to get a third flick in the can as soon as possible – because Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis will soon be too long in the tooth to convince us as sophisticated girls-about-town.

And if our eyes don’t deceive us, La Moss is finally starting to look like she’s in her mid-30s – a blessed relief for those of us who’ve looked 42 since we were about 17…

Take Glee star Lea Michele, for example. She did her bit for the all-singing, all-dancing TV success story by showing up to the Glee spring premiere party in what can charitably be described as “a giant child’s painting rag”. Of course, she usually wears garish cardigans and so on, so maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised.

Also turning up the colourometer till it bled was Katie Price aka Jordan. In all fairness, it was last year that saw the “glamour” model rocking a lurid orange singlet when running the London Marathon, but her announcement that she’s not repeating the feat this year prompted all the red-tops to publish the pic again, so we’re duty-bound to point it out. Obviously.

Meanwhile in monochrome corner, who’s that? Why, if it ain’t Katy Perry, who can usually be relied upon to add a splash of colour to proceedings. Why so downbeat, Katy? Maybe she’s just relishing having a day away from fiancé Russell Brand… Anyway, also turning up dressed all in black – this time at a movie premiere – were Susan Sarandon and Al Pacino.

These guys went all-out, actually: Susan complemented her inky dress with a black sock to cover her bandaged ankle (a humanitarian injury, no less), and Al accessorised with a black-clad girlfriend, Lucia Sola. He also let the side down somewhat with a navy blue scarf – and everyone knows navy and black don’t go well together…

Regardless of what colour they where, it seems that these celebrities don’t do things by halves. Mind you, would we want them to?

And what better star to watch than our favourite Lady Gaga, who dominated with wins in the international categories for Best female, Best Breakthrough Act and Best Album for The Fame.

Of course we couldn’t mention Lady Gaga without checking her monster fashion. Whether you think the woman is a style maker or a style hater, she certainly knows how to make it on the red carpet. Tuesday found her posing as some kid’s Christmas dolly angel in giant white tiers of gathered cloth topped  with a mad candyfloss barnet,  the unholy hair union of Marge Simpson and the Bride of Frankenstein.

But no, GaGa’s  appearance would not be complete with at least two outfits and she didn’t disappoint, ripping off swaddles of white tulle during her performance to reveal some kind of one-armed, one-legged lace jumpsuit. Only the Lady could grapple with the demon child of a cello and keytar in fungal growths of lace and make it look stylish. Yeah, and the fierce booties. Love it.

Having sold eight million albums and 35 million singles in the last 12 months, we can’t say it’s a surprise that Gaga swept the awards show. Indeed, her label manager Akon has said that her success has pretty much retired him from singing! After several failed deals and years struggling to make it, Akon saw something great and picked her up on his Kon Live label. I bet he’s now laughing all the way to the bank.

Speaking of retirement – winner Lily Allen continues to feed the celebrity news rumour mill by threatening to retire at 24 with her standard poor-little-starlet routine. The Daily star quoted Allen as saying her performance at the Brits was “the perfect way to say goodbye” and that she wants to focus more on personal life and other business ventures.

And what a ridiculous good-bye! Allen opened the show riding on stage on a giant glitter bomb with a Best of British troop of fierce nannies and pop-bankers in bowler hats and Union Jack boxers. Mary Poppins would not approve.

Awards season is well and truly here and over the next few weeks the celebrity news pages will be filled with lists of nominations, wins, losses and fabulous red carpet fashion. But one annual honours list has jumped ahead of the others to praise emerging Hollywood talent with a bright future.

 

The Orange Rising Star Awards is now into its sixth year and has collected together a bunch of the finest acting talent to have appeared on screens in the last 12 months. Each of the nominees not only has at least one great performance on their CV, but could also have a potentially huge career ahead of them with some exciting projects in the works. Past winners have included James McAvoy, Kristen Stewart and Shia LeBeouf, below are the contenders for the 2011 prize.

 

Gemma Arterton

She may be known for her appearance as a Bond girl in Quantum Of Solace, but Miss Arterton has wasted no time since in making a name for herself. Last year she appeared in blockbusters Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time and Clash of the titans, but was also busy clocking up her drama credentials in The Disappearance Of Alice Creed and Tamara Drewe.

 

Andrew Garfield

Alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake, Garfield shone brightly last year in David Fincher’s The Social Network – a film that looks set to pick up more than its fair share of awards nominations in the next few weeks. However, the actor is set for a career-defining moment in 2012 when he takes over from Tobey Maguire in the upcoming reboot of Spider-man.

 

Emma Stone

Ms Stone will also get the chance to become a household name in the aforementioned superhero flick when it finally arrives as Gwen Stacey, the love interest of the spandex-clad wall-crawler. In the past, however, her sassy performances in Superbad, Zombieland and, more recently, Easy A have made her a familiar face for many.

 

Tom Hardy

The stupendous virtual one-man movie that was Bronson in 2008 was less of a biopic of its titular ant-hero and more of a showcase for Hardy’s previously unknown talents. It seems Hollywood was paying attention and the actor has since worked with Christopher Nolan in the uber-hit of 2010 Inception. Expected to replace Mel Gibson as Mad Max in an upcoming remake subtitled Fury Road, hardy is one of the most interesting British stars out there.  

 

Aaron Johnson

Originally tipped for the Spider-man role before it was offered to Andrew Garfield, Aaron Johnson made his own impact on the film world in 2010 with his lead role in Kick Ass. However, his slightly less high profile performances in John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy and teen drama Chatroom have also garnered him some serious attention.
